I thought it was high time to talk about some of the hottest new releases in the world of handheld GPS and some of the changes that have taken place recently. But let me introduce myself first, I’m Richard and I run SatelliteMapReview, a resource website where you can find the best reviews and best prices around for handheld GPS. It’s my business to get under the skin of the latest releases and get my readers the low down so that people can make a sound decision when it comes to purchase. So anyway, today I’d like to talk about a couple of fairly new developments in handheld GPS, the release of Garmin’s new eTrex range and also the arrival of Magellan handheld GPS in the UK and Europe, over from America.
So, the first big thing to shake up the handheld GPS market is the continued success of Garmin’s new eTrex series of handheld GPS. The old eTrex series was always a big favourite for those looking for compact, reliable plan-style GPS mappers and even to this day you can see them still being used all over the world. However Garmin have seen fit to update the series, producing three brand new compact handhelds, the eTrex 10, 20 and 30. The eTrex 10 is the most basic of the series but still highly useful in terms of tracking geographical position. The screen is monochrome but the unit has plenty of customizable features and has become a best-seller on my site.
The eTrex 20 and 30 models are much more advanced and feature the ability to use advanced Ordnance-Survey style mapping, available from Garmin’s online shop. These little GPS have been among the best sellers on my site as they as are so compact, the mapping resolution is so good and they have all the features of much more pricey devices. In fact that’s probably the best thing about the new eTrex series – they are priced so well considering just how many high-tech features they possess.
So that’s a little explanation of the superb new eTrex range and why they are doing so well. However I predict a rival to Garmin’s previously undisputed dominance in the world of handheld GPS: Magellan. Previously Magellan handheld GPS have only been available in the US and Canada – over here in Europe we’ve heard plenty of good stuff about them but never had the chance to get a hold of them! Well the good news is that Magellan eXplorist GPS, a series of advanced and brand new handheld GPS are now available for purchase in the UK and Europe . I’ve got all of them reviewed and available on the site and I’ve been really impressed with them so far.
Magellan’s eXplorist range is newly available in the UK and in Europe and consists of five handheld GPS which cover the whole spectrum of budget and features. The first in the series is the only handheld GPS expressly designed for geocaching, the eXplorist GC. It’s compact with a 2.2 inch screen and built specifically to store and relay data on cache locations. The next one up in the series is the 310 which uses the same size body and screen but adds some more dedicated GPS features and mapping. For its size it is pretty powerful and will prove a rival to the eTrex 20, I predict. From there you’ve got the 510, 610 and 710 models, all more advanced handheld GPS machines with camera, recording facilities and all the toys like advanced OS-style mapping barometric altimeter and customizable menu options. So there’s a little intro to some of the biggest trends right now in handheld GPS. Do come over to visit my site at SatelliteMapReview and get all the reviews and best prices, I’ll see you there!

Handheld GPS enthusiasts in Europe and Britain have been asking for a while when Magellan are going to introduce their fantastic models to this market. Magellan have proven a true rival for Garmin in the States in the handheld GPS market, and their excellent eXplorist range is now available. This particular range of handheld GPS covers all bases, going from small compact specialised geocaching models right up to more advanced GPS mappers with all of the most advanced features you would expect. Over on my main site, satellitemapreview.com, I have got the whole range reviewed, compared and with best price tables.
Okay, so what is so good about Magellan as a GPS manufacturer, and why should you consider looking into their models? I want to make a quick introduction to some of the main models and the features you can expect to find in them right here, starting with the base model, the eXplorist GC. This specific handheld GPS has been designed expressly with geocaching in mind. There is no other handheld GPS on the market which currently does this. Because it is specifically designed for geocaching, it is compact, rugged, and the software and menus available are easy to use in conjunction with finding your cache information. There is plenty of space for GPX files and geocaching information such as location, terrain, difficulty, characteristics and more is easily arranged on the screen for you.
The next one up in the series is the eXplorist 310. This is the same size as the GC model with a 2.2 inch screen and compact rugged size. However, we’re now into proper handheld GPS territory, and the 310 has a range of good features for use as a hiking mapper. Powerful customizable features allow you to plot trip data just as you like. You can arrange on screen such options as distance to destination, estimated time of arrival, compass, heading and more.
The more advanced handheld GPS in the series are the 510, 610, and the 710 models. These handheld GPS are built on a slightly larger body, and with a 3 inch sunlight readable screen. They have all the best GPS technology available including what Magellan likes to call trip experience recording facilities. These are things like camera, video recorder, voice recorder and the ability for geotagging. The idea is that you can take photos or record your voice over your trip data and share it online easily with friends or on a website such as geocaching.com. These handheld GPS are super easy to use and feel vibrant modern and fun. The 710 model actually also has vehicle navigation inbuilt and will provide competition to the advanced all in one mapper, the Garmin Montana 650.
So, that’s just a quick introduction to some of the things you can do with the different Magellan eXplorist models out now in the UK and Europe. I’ve reviewed all of the models and in my opinion they are every bit as good as some of the Garmin offerings; I especially liked the dedicated GC model which is just great for geocaching. Don’t forget to check out the full reviews of Magellan GPS and more over at the main site, satellitemapreview.com. You’ll find best price tables and recommendations that will help you decide which handheld you want and how best to get it. Bye for now!
