Hello everybody, it’s Richard Lopez again from SatelliteMapReview.com and today I’d like to have a look at the Memory Map Adventurer series of GPS devices. I’ve already discussed a few outstanding GPS mapping devices such as the Satmap Active 10 Plus and the Garmin Montana series. The reason I like these models is because of the quality of the on-screen mapping options. It used to be that a handheld GPS device would just do the basics, giving you your GPS co-ordinates, your bearing and perhaps a very basic rendering of your environment, but nothing resembling a real map. Now, with the Montana series, Satmap Active 10 and the Memory Map Adventurer series GPS is so much more than just, well, GPS! These GPS devices use Ordnance Survey-powered maps generated on-screen to give you an unprecedented all-round vision and understanding of your physical environment whilst laying all your GPS and positional tools over the top. So, let’s have a look at what Memory Map have to offer with their Adventurer series of GPS.
The Adventurer series from Memory Map consists of two models, both with a distinctive yellow cover. These are the smaller 2800 model, and the slightly larger 3500 model. The difference is in the size and price. The 2800 model is smaller, more rectangular and preferred by some because of its size whereas the 3500 is more like a tablet size and comes with the option of a handy stylus. Both of the devices run off an excellent and high-powered 50 channel GPS receiver which gives an excellent and quick lock on and stays strong in all conditions.
The Adventurer 2800 and 3500 series both run off Ordnance Survey style maps. As I said at the outset, one of the key things for quality in GPS for me is the standard of the mapping and in this aspect Memory Map does not let you down. Both these models have capability for the Landranger and Explorer Ordnance Survey mapping options which means you can get full access to the quality colour maps on your GPS screen. You can get different scales of map on the Adventurer series of GPS according to your needs and navigation.
Both the 2800 and 3500 operate via a touchscreen interface and the 3500 also comes with a stylus option, handy for those days when you’re perhaps wearing gloves. Both models have high-resolution 96,000 pixel screens with the 2800 screen size of 2.8 inches and the 3500 with a larger 3.5 inch screen. It’s worth noting the 3500 comes with the option of marine charts as well as the normal land-based maps so it could easily be used onboard a boat.
Memory Map have something called their V5 map collection which is a range of mapping add-ons which can be used in conjunction with either model of the Adventurer series. You can select which area you want to explore and then buy the appropriate mapping section. There’s full PC software available with both models to allow you to plan routes, store data and transfer information from your GPS to computer and vice versa. The 3500 has an option called the DigitalGPS window which allows you to arrange the interface and how you read the GPS data exactly as you want it.
Well, as with a lot of modern GPS, I could go on and on about the features ad nauseum but if there’s one thing I want you to take away about the Memory Map Adventurer Series it’s the quality of the mapping and the decent digital rendering on-screen – the aspects which are most important to me as a GPS reviewer. Well, thanks for reading – I hope you’ve found this article somewhat informative and remember I’ve got all the top handheld GPS reviewed and compared on my dedicated resource site, SatelliteMapReview.com so head on over to us and check it all out. In the meantime happy navigating.
